Usually, a beard is given to a comics character for a reason. The obvious first one is to show that he is some kind of savage, prehistoric man.

An extension of that is to give a beard to lycanthropic character, so that they would have some extra fur to help you spot them.

By the way, Commander Rann is probably one of the comics hero with the thicker beard ever drawn (his chest is not bad either as you can see :p).
D'ailleurs, Commander Rann est sans doute le héros de comics qui a la barbe la mieux fournie (et plutot bien pourvu niveau torse aussi comme vous pouvez le voir :p)

Un héros mythologique se doit de porter la barbe ? Va dire ça à Thor ! Mais c'est toi qui a raison et les dessinateurs de Marvel qui ont tort (ha ha !) car le vrai Thor scandinave a la barbe.
Sinon, comme barbe la plus fournie, moi j'aurais plutôt vu The Chief de la Doom Patrol, mais je ne suis pas objectif.
